Poppyscotland Press Release 31 October 2011 GREEN FINGERED GROUND STAFF FROM EAST AND WEST MAKE MOTORISTS SEE RED To mark the 2011 Scottish Poppy Appeal, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this November, ground staff from Hampden and Murrayfield have joined forces to paint giant poppies on the famous grass pyramids at J3a on the M8 today (31 October 2011) while the Heavy Horse statue at Baillieston is wearing a specially-designed poppy, created by the original sculptor. Three poppies, each measuring 10m x 10m, will be visible on the pyramids, owned by the nearby Pyramids Business Park, for the next two weeks to raise awareness of the Scottish Poppy Appeal, run by veteransâ charity Poppyscotland. Fraser Bedwell, Poppyscotlandâs Head of Marketing, said: âThis is a very special year for the Scottish Poppy Appeal. Ninety years on it is still providing life-changing support to Scotlandâs veterans and their families and is needed now as much as ever. We want to raise as much awareness as possible over the next two weeks and we hope that the poppies on the pyramids and the bespoke poppy on the Heavy Horse will both brighten up driversâ journeys and generate support for the Appeal.â Poppyscotland uses money raised from the Scottish Poppy Appeal to provide vital support to veterans and their families in Scotland. Many veterans find it hard to make the adjustment from military to civilian life and may struggle with issues such as finances, housing and employment. Peter Dallas, Managing Director at Hampden Park Ltd, said: âWe are pleased to be supporting the 2011 Scottish Poppy Appeal in the creation of this unique display, which will help to raise awareness of the Appeal and be seen by thousands of motorists every day.â Jim Dawson from Murrayfield added: âThis was quite a challenge as weâre not used to painting designs on to such steep surfaces! However, we were very keen to get involved to support Poppyscotland and weâre delighted with the result. Itâs all for a good cause and itâs a great way to get the message out.â The paint and machinery to apply the poppy design to the pyramids has been provided at a discounted cost by Linemark UK. The poppy on the Heavy Horse was kindly created by the sculptureâs designer, Andy Scott. ENDS Media contact: Leigh James, Poppyscotland. Tel 0131 550 1580 / 07766 475886. Grants to specialist organisations Last year we awarded funding of over £900,000 to 15 specialist organisations We can direct our funding to where the need is greatest. Over the past year we have supported initiatives run by other organisations including mental health outreach services to help veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, specialist employment advisory services to assist disadvantaged and vulnerable veterans and the construction of specially-adapted homes for disabled veterans. Armed Services Advice Project (ASAP) Last year, in conjunction with other ex-Service charities, we launched the Armed Services Advice Project (ASAP), which offers free and confidential advice to serving personnel, veterans and their families in Scotland on a wide range of issues including finances, benefits, housing and employment.
